About this deal

However, on 26 June 2009, the BBC announced that it had recommissioned the show for a 31st series with Bell continuing as producer and director. A lot of that can be described in negative terms: it isn’t soft, it isn’t cuddly, it isn’t slapstick, it isn’t a series of schticks from an array of characters who wqheel on and off to do their bit and dilute the amount of screentime that reduces the workload for an aging cast of characters.

Foggy, and all those who have assumed his status in later years, is the butt, and Clegg and Compo the opposition, so to speak. Ballad for Wind Instruments and Canoe' has the trio embark upon a canoe expedition, Finally, in 'Northern Flying Circus', Compo dons goggles and helmet to become the new Barry Sheen.

So much could have been built upon that moment, but that was not what LOTSW was going to be, which was a shame. The BBC confirmed on 2 June 2010 that Last of the Summer Wine would no longer be produced and the 31st series would be its last.

Crusher didn’t last long, but with Nora’s husband Wally (Joe Gladwyn) now taking a regular supporting role instead of occasional appearances, the show suddenly had a wide range of players, each with their own quirks. Of course, ultimately, Wally’s not gone for good, he’s just taking a breather, and Compo knows this all along. Still much, much better than watching from a well used VHS or poor quality youtube copy from over a decade ago.

The BBC was not supposed to follow that imperative, although the barrage of attacks from commercial interests over several years have forced them far too far along that route.
