About this deal

Hard to navigate, excruciatingly slow, not enough organization options, and just generally unpleasant to use as a smart home controller, the Alexa app is ripe for a makeover. It works as a great device for bedrooms, with its handy little screen, but if you want something more powerful – opt for the Echo Show 8 or Echo Show 10. It uses Eero’s TrueMesh software technology, tapping into the dual-band Wi-Fi radios in the speakers to find the strongest connection and then extend it.

The sphere is split diagonally, with the top and forward half covered in grille fabric and the bottom and back half bound in matte plastic. Though it was possible to get it louder than the other two, that was only by introducing distortion as well.

If you've been watching the Echo Sub for a while, wishing you could just add the smart speaker into the fantastic sound for a complete package, you'll want to check out 2019's Echo Studio. The new temperature sensor can tell you the temperature in the room (and show you on the display) as well as trigger Alexa Routines. Furthermore, this device also provides functionality for the users through connecting to services and apps such as Twitter, Uber, and Spotify. The Alexa app will then walk you through the rest of the setup process, including customizing your "wake word," mastering the pronunciation of your name, allowing access to phone contacts, and more.

Putting the new model and the 2020 version side by side on my desk and switching the music between them using Spotify Connect, the difference is noticeable, but not as great as the change from third-gen to fourth-gen. Playing Greta Van Fleet’s Zeppelin-esque operatic ballad Meeting The Master is a stern test for a small speaker, but the dynamics, range and balance of presentation are impressive, and while you’ll get a far superior experience on more dedicated hi-fi speakers, this is an admirable effort from a budget-friendly smart speaker. you can get the Echo Dot with an LED display, which allows you to display the current time in style. This delivers better sound – especially in the bass department – and it promises less distortion at louder volumes too. The improvement to sound quality is noticeable, but only if you have it and the previous-gen model next to one another.

Plus, both the Echo Dot devices have that nifty tap functionality on the top, which the Echo 4th generation doesn’t. In 100 years, if this was held up as an example of the smart speakers of this era, I don't know of anyone right now who'd complain. The very first Echo was a pretty dreary-sounding tube, but successive iterations have improved the sound somewhat. Our bass test track, The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” sounds weak on the speaker, with little low-frequency response. It features an upward-firing driver inside its mesh, giving our music a wider and taller soundstage in terms of height, and with support for 3D audio tracks, Dolby Atmos-enabled and Sony Reality 360 Audio-enabled tracks, it sounded just that much sweeter with its encompassing immersion.
