About this deal

However, the positive outlook is shown to be false, as the veterans are later presented as pessimistic people, especially Arthur Rivier, who struggles to cope with not talking about the war.

A serious well written YA novel exploring the nature of heroism, set in post WW2 USA but managing to retain a timeless quality.Francis’ backstory and the heartbreaking reason he felt like he had to go to war are interesting, adding to the pathos of what is both a untraditional story about war and a chronicle of innocence lost. At the end of the story as Francis makes his way to LeSalle's flat, up the stairs and into his room. This is a great book for older and younger readers alike as it provides plenty of opportunity for discussion on these important topics - it is remarkably complex despite its shortness, and I'm not surprised to learn that it's been included on the GCSE curricula.

This book is about a 14 year old kid name francis cassavant that goes to war and loses some of his face. One night Larry, the first in town to enlist in the war, is home on furlough at the Wreck Center with Francis and Nicole. Heroes, published in 1998, is a novel written by American author Robert Cormier who is known for addressing darker subjects in his books for young adults. Heroes and 17 other books were challenged by Richard and Alice Ess, founders of the Fairfax County, Virginia group Parents Against Bad Book in Schools.

He dosen't know that Larry lets him win till he finds out , times passes and Francis meats a new girl arrivies at St Jude's who falls in love with. Nicole has clearly moved on from the experience with Larry, when Francis visits near the end of the novel the love between the two has disappeared, something which deeply upsets Francis. The book’s purpose was to show how much betrayal, love, hate, guilt, and forgiveness can impact a person.Cormier is also the author of the award-winning novel, The Chocolate War-- one of the most frequently challenged books in the United States between 1990 and 2000 according to the American Library Association. As the two men talk, Francis confesses that the true reason he went to war was because he wanted to die, and then he reveals that he witnessed the rape. Over the course of the book we find out why Francis has it out for this man and get a glimpse into his life before the war, and his short-lived relationship with a girl from his hometown who he was and continues to be in love with, Nicole Renard. This book was interesting and I thought that the characters were well introduced as we are given a lot of information for such a short book but overall it just wasn't my cup of tea. Biography: Robert Cormier was a journalist and author, acclaimed for his young adult novels with their uncompromising examination of contemporary issues.
