About this deal

Now, there aren’t a lot of great Jason Todd/Robin stories that come to mind, so this, for me, really stands out for Jason’s career as Robin.

By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.

While this happens, Jason Todd, AKA Robin sneaks into the sewer in a disguise and infiltrates the cult.

Batman is captured, broken and brainwashed and participates in a killing before being rescued by Robin. But peel back the layers on this dark tale and you have one of the finest tales of the Dark Knight ever told, just in a different way than what is considered the norm by today's standards. One scene of note- when the young would-be comics artist gets killed by the underworlders- the full page of simply the blood stained artwork- is exceptional- and moving. Blackfire somehow manages to not only subdue Batman but also the Gotham Police Force, the National Guard, the United States Army - all through brainwashed homeless people!

As all men do, when they realize they have been following a false leader, they turn on Blackfire and rip him to shreds. For example, why wouldn’t Deacon Blackfire unmask Batman while the Caped Crusader is in his custody? This is a great Batman book of the late 80's (not on the same level as Year One or The Killing Joke, but still very good). The miniseries was later collected in 1991 as a trade paperback graphic novel ( ISBN 0-930289-85-4). Starlin deals with serious themes such as poverty, people using religion or social causes for their own gain, and vigilantism.

When the officer attempts to help Batman, the dark knight has a bad trip and knocks the policeman out. Batman has rarely been pushed to these limits and it's refreshing to see that it's not some hokey plot involving people from Bruce's childhood. It begins with Batman abducted, a prisoner of charismatic Deacon Blackfire and his subterranean band of homeless followers.

He has a tank, he has a gun that shoots tranquilizer darts, he leaves people behind for dead, and by the end it felt less and less like a Batman book I want to read.
